FAQs

What is AQUACEL® Ag Foam dressing?

AQUACEL® Ag Foam dressing (Adhesive and Non Adhesive) is a range of sterile foam dressings containing Hydrofiber® Technology and a waterproof barrier that offers protection against viral and bacterial penetration,*1 with the adhesive dressing having a silicone adhesive border. AQUACEL® Ag Foam dressing is the only foam dressing that has the comfort of foam, the bacteria-killing power of ionic silver*2 and the healing benefits of an AQUACEL® layer.

What is AQUACEL® Ag Foam dressing indicated for? What sort of wounds can AQUACEL® Ag Foam dressing be used to dress?

Under medical supervision, AQUACEL® Ag Foam dressing range may be used as stated in its directions for use for the management of both chronic and acute wounds, such as:

  • Wounds where there is an infection or an increased risk of infection;
  • Partial thickness (second degree) burns;
  • Diabetic foot ulcers; leg ulcers (venous stasis ulcers, arterial ulcers and leg ulcers of mixed aetiology); and pressure ulcers/sores (partial & full thickness);
  • Surgical wounds;
  • Traumatic wounds;
  • Wounds that are prone to bleeding, such as wounds that have been mechanically or surgically debrided;
  • Oncology wounds with exudate, such as fungoides‐cutaneous tumors, fungating carcinoma, cutaneous metastasis, Kaposi’s sarcoma and angiosarcoma

For deep wounds that are infected or at risk of infection, AQUACEL® Ag dressing is recommended as a primary dressing, with an AQUACEL® Foam dressing as the cover dressing.

How does AQUACEL® Ag Foam dressing work?

AQUACEL® Ag Foam dressing combines the comfort and absorbency of a soft foam pad with the exudate management of Hydrofiber® Technology2 and the bacteria-killing power of ionic silver.*3

  • Low lateral wicking and high fluid retention properties of the Hydrofiber® Technology help lock exudate in the AQUACEL® Ag Foam dressing. This may help reduce the risk of maceration of peri-wound skin as demonstrated in vitro.4-8
  • Ionic silver kills a wide variety of micro-organisms – including certain tested antibiotic-resistant superbugs – within 30 minutes, and provides sustained bacterial killing for up to seven days.*3,9-12

Is AQUACEL® Ag Foam dressing absorbent?

The foam and AQUACEL® Ag wound contact layer within the dressing absorb high levels of wound fluid. The AQUACEL® Ag wound contact layer creates a soft, cohesive gel that absorbs and locks in exudate,2 intimately conforming to the wound surface13 as demonstrated in vitro, helping to maintain a moist environment in the wound (which helps reduce pain associated with frequent dressing changes).14-17

In in vitro testing of AQUACEL® Ag Foam dressing compared to Mepilex™ Border Ag dressing and Allevyn Ag Gentle Border dressing, AQUACEL® Ag Foam dressing absorbed and retained more fluid under compression than the other silver foam dressings tested.*7 ,8

What are the benefits of AQUACEL® Ag Foam dressing?

Only AQUACEL® Ag Foam dressing offers comfort, simplicity, and the healing benefits of an AQUACEL® wound contact layer.

    • Waterproof barrier provides:
    • Controlled moisture vapor transmission*
    • Protection against viral/bacterial penetration*1
    • Soft foam pad absorbs fluid*
    • Silicone adhesive border adheres to skin, outside of wound bed
    • AQUACEL® Ag layer with Hydrofiber® Technology gels on contact with the wound surface to:
    • Lock in wound exudate, including harmful components*2
    • Maintain a moist environment, helping reduce the pain associated with frequent dressing changes*14-17
    • Prevent lateral spread of fluid, reducing the risk of maceration*4 -8
    • Micro-contour to the wound bed, minimizing dead space where bacteria can grow*13
    • Kill a wide variety of micro-organisms, including certain tested antibiotic-resistant superbugs, with powerful ionic silver*3,9-12

Technical Information

During dressing application, can I reposition and adjust the AQUACEL® Ag Foam dressing silicone border without loss of adherent properties?

Yes, during dressing application, the AQUACEL® Ag Foam dressing can be repositioned and adjusted. The gentle silicone border on the AQUACEL® Ag Foam dressing will still be adherent.

Is AQUACEL® Ag Foam dressing waterproof? Is the film backing waterproof? Does AQUACEL® Ag Foam dressing have a bacterial and viral barrier?

The outer film in AQUACEL® Ag Foam dressing provides a waterproof viral and bacterial barrier,*1 which protects the wound from external contaminants, reducing the risk of infection.

Medical Information

When is AQUACEL® Ag Foam dressing contraindicated?

AQUACEL® Ag Foam dressings should not be used on individuals who are sensitive to or who have had an allergic reaction to the dressing or its components.

Is there a risk that the wound dries out?

There is potential for the wound to dry out if exudate levels are low, or when the wound stops producing exudate. The choice of dressing should be made based on clinical requirements and judgment.

Will AQUACEL® Ag Foam dressing cause any wound maceration?

By virtue of its gel blocking properties, the AQUACEL® Ag wound contact layer in AQUACEL® Ag Foam dressing absorbs exudate and locks it in, helping to prevent it from spreading laterally. This action may reduce the risk of maceration of peri-wound skin.*4 -8

Handling Information

When should AQUACEL® Ag Foam dressing be changed?

The dressings should be changed when clinically indicated (i.e., leakage, bleeding, increased pain). Maximum recommended wear time is up to seven days. The dressings can be worn in the shower.

How should heavily exuding wounds be managed when leakage occurs?

If the dressing is leaking, change AQUACEL® Ag Foam dressings more frequently.

Can AQUACEL® Ag Foam dressing be cut to the wound size?

AQUACEL® Ag Foam dressings are intended to cover and protect both the wound and the peri‐wound skin. If needed, AQUACEL® Ag Foam dressings can be cut to size with sterile scissors. If the adhesive dressing is cut, an appropriate retention bandage or tape should be used to secure the dressing in place. When selecting dressing size, choose a dressing size or shape that is 1/3 inch (1cm) larger than the wound area.

How is AQUACEL® Ag Foam dressing secured in place?

The AQUACEL® Ag Foam adhesive dressing range has a gentle silicone adhesive border that provides secure, skin‐friendly adhesion18 and supports non‐traumatic removal19 of the dressing while minimising damage to the intact surrounding skin.

Additional tape, or other means of fixation, will be required to secure AQUACEL® Ag Foam Non Adhesive dressings in place.

How should AQUACEL®

Ag Foam dressing be stored?

AQUACEL® Ag Foam dressings should be stored at room temperature (10° C ‐ 25° C/50° F ‐ 77° F). It should be protected from light and kept dry.
